The catalog Tree Hut in Montpellier documents the solo exhibition of the artist Tadashi Kawamata at the Fondation GGL in Montpellier which runs from June 22 to December 10, 2022. It consists of a preface by Alain Guiraudon, a presentation by Richard Leydier and a conversation with the artist. It has been produced with the support of the kamel mennour gallery.
Tadashi Kawamata is a Japanese visual artist born in 1953 in Mikasa on the island of Hokkaidō. He lives and works in Tokyo and Paris. Famous for his works in situ made throughout the world, assembling wooden planks, chairs, barrels. He has participated in numerous international exhibitions and biennials such as the Venice Biennale (1982), documenta 8 and IX (1987 ; 1992), the International Biennial of São Paulo (1987), the Biennial of Contemporary Art of Lyon (1993), the Skulptur Projekte Münster (1997), the Biennial of Sydney (1998), the Jerusalem Biennale (1999), the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial in Niigata (2000), the Shanghai Biennial, the Busan Biennial (2002), the Valencia Biennial (2004), the Melle Biennial (2009), the Evento Biennial in Bordeaux (2009), and the Helsinki Biennial (2021) His work has been presented in institutions such as MAAT, Lisbon (2018), Pushkin Museum, Moscow (2018), Made in Cloister in Naples (2017), Thurgau Art Museum, Switzerland (2014), Center Pompidou in Paris (2010) and Metz (2016), Toyosu Dome in Tokyo (2010-2013), HKW in Berlin (2009), Art Tower Mito in Mito (2001), Serpentine Gallery in London (1997), MACBA in Barcelona (1996).
Richard Leydier is an exhibition curator, art critic and former editor-in-chief of the magazine Art Press. In this context, he has written a large number of monographs devoted to artists as diverse as David Altmejd, Bernhard Martin, Georg Baselitz, Vanessa Beecroft and Ernesto Neto. He is the author of several books on Ronan Barrot, Marc Desgrandchamps, Jean Messagier, Jonathan Meese and François Rouan, among others. He is currently the artistic director of the Fondation GGl in Montpellier.
