The monograph Clément Denis. Ut pictura poesis is the first reference work on the French artist co-published with RHK Studio. It traces his career to his move to Claude Monet's house in Vétheuil, on the impressionist banks of the Seine. An essay by art historian Monique Riccardi-Cubitt situates his work in the continuity of his predecessors, shows his main discoveries and the first influences of the painter in a metaphysical quest.
Emerging artist born in 1991, graduate of the Ateliers de Sèvres and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, Clément Denis already offers a complete and coherent pictorial corpus, in series, whose painting is figurative with expressionist tendencies. Having grown up between the banks of the Loire and the island of Noirmoutier, he is fascinated by the natural river and marine landscapes of these areas. Spaces where he paints the diversity of great human experiences, which he places at the center of everything.
A way of seeing the world which will infuse all his painting and which he inscribes in a humanist conception. Relying on a work of matter, textures, colors, the painting of Clément Denis escapes a univocal reading. The apparent simplicity of the compositions covers a metaphysical background, giving his painting a troubling presence.
Monique Riccardi-Cubitt is a native of the Loire Valley and lives between Paris, Rome and London, where she completed her studies in art history at the Ecole du Louvre, Courtauld Institute, University of London. She has lectured at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the American University of Beirut, and the National Museum in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. She was the director of the Styles in Art course at the Sotheby's School of Art, and founded The Riccardi Institute of Art.
A British author and member of the Chartered Institute of Journalists in London, she is also a member of the Société des Gens de Lettres de France and the Société des Amis de Port-Royal. She is particularly interested in the Renaissance movement, of which Clément Denis embodies the typical interdisciplinary figure of the humanist artist.
