Speedy Graphito. Visite au musée is the catalog published for the exhibition “Speedy Graphito. Visite au musée ”at the Provost Hacker Gallery in Lille (FR) from November 25, 2021 to January 15, 2022.
Born in 1961, Speedy Graphito lives and works in Paris. A pioneering avant-garde artist, recognized as one of the pioneers of the French “Street Art” movement (contemporary urban art), he is now internationally recognized as one of the major artists of his generation.
Since the beginning of the 80s, just after free figuration, Speedy Graphito has permeated the collective memory and the walls of Paris with the “Graphito Style” by coloring them with his striking graphics.
As prolific as he is inventive, Speedy uses all the forms of expression - painting, sculpture, installation, photo or video, to create through his work and over the ages a universal language imbued with the zeitgeist.
Developed by themes, his exhibitions follow one another offering always new and surprising universes. Constantly evolving and reinventing itself, his trademark is that of a joyful and deep art, often with bright colors, in which he playfully and ironically shakes up our systems of perception. In this process, he does not hesitate to appropriate and divert all the imagery of popular culture, super heroes, even brands, thus achieving an almost systematic decryption of our collective unconscious. He then declines in as many questions the norms and diktats of our Western cultural identity, superimposing a more poetic dimension on the reality of our society.
"Speedy samples, picks, grabs and appropriates freely, mixes like a DJ with his own playlist. He certainly belongs to the culture of his time, heir to this 20th century shaped by the radicalism of Marcel Duchamp with his ready-mades, the desire for spirituality of a Mondrian or a Kandinsky or the strike force of a Warhol who desecrates art.
